Student email 2026: school domains, first login, and edu perks

What is a student email used for?

Short answer: almost everything academic flows through it. Tuition notices, exam schedules, academic warnings, and messages from lecturers and advisors land in this inbox, not in your personal Gmail. At many schools the email account is also the login for the LMS and the academic portal.

The second reason to activate it early is student verification. Services such as Microsoft Office 365 Education, the GitHub Student Developer Pack, Canva for Education, and Notion Education all check whether you are a student, and the fastest route is a confirmation code sent to your .edu.vn address. Without it you usually have to upload a student-card photo and wait for manual review.

yourcampus.io checked five schools in detail (HCMUT, UEH, HCMUTE, TDTU, EIU), and all five run student email on Google Workspace (Gmail). That means the interface, the 2-step verification setup, and account recovery work almost exactly like a personal Gmail; only the address format and the initial password are set by the school.

Student email domains by university (36 schools)

'What is my school's student mail domain?' sounds simple, but few pages answer it because every school chooses its own. Some use the main domain directly (@hcmut.edu.vn, @eiu.edu.vn, @ftu.edu.vn); others put students on a separate subdomain such as @st.ueh.edu.vn, @student.tdtu.edu.vn, @student.hcmute.edu.vn, @gm.uit.edu.vn, or @sv.sgu.edu.vn. Member schools of Vietnam National University, Hanoi share @vnu.edu.vn.

The table lists the 36 domains in yourcampus.io's compiled list (as of July 2026): the Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho schools were cross-checked against their official sites, while the Hanoi and Da Nang schools follow the Wikipedia list, so double-check those against your admission letter. It does not yet cover all of the roughly 240 universities in the country (per MOET, 2023-24 academic year; 300-plus if academies and member schools are counted), so if your school is missing, check your admission letter or ask the IT office. Note that only the domain is listed; the part before the @ (full name, student ID, or a custom ID) is set by each school and covered in the next section.

Knowing the right domain also helps you spot fake emails: real academic notices come from the school's address (e.g. @hcmute.edu.vn), never from a personal Gmail claiming to be the 'academic office'.

How to log in to your student email for the first time: HCMUT, UEH, HCMUTE, TDTU, EIU

Activating your student email for the first time means three things: knowing your address, knowing the initial password the school set, and using the right login page. Since all five of these schools run Gmail, you can go straight to gmail.com and type your school address; some schools also offer their own link (mail.hcmut.edu.vn, mail.student.tdtu.edu.vn, mail.student.hcmute.edu.vn), but it ends up on the Google sign-in screen anyway.

Address format and initial password are where schools differ the most, and they are also what freshmen most often ask about in cohort groups. The table below follows each school's official guide; the initial password is listed only where the school publishes it, otherwise the cell is left blank and you should check your own admission letter.

• HCMUT (BKnetID email) The HCMUT BKnetID email shares its account with MyBK: activate BKnetID first following OISP's guide, then sign in at mail.hcmut.edu.vn or gmail.com as BKnetID@hcmut.edu.vn with your BKnetID password. There is no separate student subdomain, and the school has not clearly published how the part before the @ is formed (name-based or student ID), so use exactly the ID the school gives you.
• UEH (st.ueh.edu.vn) The UEH student email takes the form FullName.StudentID@st.ueh.edu.vn (full name without diacritics, no spaces, plus student ID) and is issued automatically as soon as your enrollment file is processed. It runs on Gmail, so sign in at gmail.com; UEH does not publish the initial password publicly (check your own enrollment notice), and if you forget it you can request an online reset as announced by UEH.
• HCMUTE (student.hcmute.edu.vn) The address is StudentID@student.hcmute.edu.vn, signed in at mail.student.hcmute.edu.vn or mail.google.com, and it doubles as the account for the academic portal and LMS. Per the K25 guide (June 2025), the initial password is 'Spkt&' followed by your date of birth; earlier cohorts used the citizen ID number. The same guide states that accounts not logged into within 14 days of issue are locked, so sign in as soon as you get it. The K25 guide is a scanned PDF, so double-check the exact string in your own admission letter.
• TDTU (student.tdtu.edu.vn) TDTU student mail is StudentID@student.tdtu.edu.vn; for example, student ID A25H9999 becomes A25H9999@student.tdtu.edu.vn. The initial password is 'TDTU' plus your student ID in uppercase; webmail is at mail.student.tdtu.edu.vn (Google Workspace for Education since July 2018). Lecturers use a separate @tdtu.edu.vn system, so do not mix up the portals.
• EIU (eiu.edu.vn) EIU issues an email to every student at enrollment on the same @eiu.edu.vn domain as staff; the address follows firstname.lastname.k<cohort><major>, with the official example hoang.dang.k2eng@eiu.edu.vn. The IT office (OIT) directs students to gmail.com to sign in, and every school announcement goes to this address.

Change your password right after the first login. Initial passwords like 'TDTU + student ID' or 'Spkt& + birth date' can be guessed by anyone who knows your student ID or birth date.

Forgot your school email password? Recovery routes and 2-step verification

If you forget your school email password, you cannot recover it with Google's 'Forgot password' button the way a personal Gmail can, because the school administers the account. Each school has its own route; the table below collects the process at five schools per their official guides, and the common thread is that you go through the school (MyBK, a reset announcement, IT Services, or the IT office), not Google.

To avoid that trip, open the Security section of your Google account on your first login, add a recovery phone and email, and turn on 2-step verification. For Google Workspace accounts, some schools may require this step or restrict the methods (for example, allowing only Google Authenticator); if an option looks locked, that is the school administrator's setting, not a problem with your device.

• Turn on 2-step verification Prefer an authenticator app or phone prompt; keep backup codes somewhere else, not in that same inbox.
• Forward to personal Gmail If you rarely open the school inbox, enable auto-forwarding so you never miss academic notices (where the school allows it).

Edu email perks in 2026: Office 365, GitHub, Canva, Notion, Google Drive

For Vietnamese students, the edu-email perks most worth having are the tools you write assignments with: free Office 365 for students (full Word, Excel, PowerPoint via Microsoft 365 Education), Canva for Education (equivalent to Canva Pro) for slides and posters, the GitHub Student Developer Pack for IT students, and Notion Education for notes. This list changes constantly; eligibility, duration, and what is included are set by each provider, so this article names the programs and the verification route and leaves the exact figures to the official pages at sign-up time.

A common misunderstanding: having a .edu.vn email does not automatically grant every perk. Providers check whether your school's domain is on their list of registered educational institutions; Microsoft 365 Education, for instance, only opens up if the school has registered with Microsoft, so a .edu.vn email at an unregistered school still gets nothing. GitHub and Canva, by contrast, usually accept either a school email or documents, so if your domain is not recognized automatically, take the document route.

• Microsoft 365 Education Enter your school email on the Office for Students page; if it says the school is not eligible, the school has not registered with Microsoft. Ask the IT office instead of looking for workarounds.
• GitHub Student Developer Pack Apply at education.github.com with your school email or a student-card photo/enrollment letter; enable location verification and enter the correct school name. Vietnamese students are approved as usual, typically within a few days.
• Canva for Education Canva prioritizes teachers and schools; students usually get access through a teacher's class invite or a school-wide plan. Check Canva's own page before trusting 'Canva Pro free forever with an edu email' claims online.
• Notion Education Sign up with your school email, then switch to the Education plan in settings; if the domain is not recognized, submit a request with documents.
• School Google Drive Your school's Workspace account includes Drive, Meet, and Classroom. Storage is allocated by the school and is not unlimited; see the last section if Drive reports it is full.

Stay away from 'free edu.vn email' guides or cheap edu accounts for sale. Those are accounts handed to people who are not students, they violate both the school's and the provider's terms, and they are routinely revoked along with the GitHub/Microsoft account you linked to them.

Can you keep your student email after graduation?

Whether your student email survives graduation has no nationwide answer: the account belongs to the school, and each school decides whether to keep, restrict, or revoke it after you leave. Schools' public email guides usually do not state when accounts are revoked, so the safe assumption is that the account can disappear at any point once your graduation is officially approved, and you should ask your school's IT office directly.

So do not use the school email as your main account for banking, e-wallets, job applications, or any service you want to keep long-term. Perks tied to the school email (GitHub, Microsoft, Notion) also end once you can no longer verify as a student, so download materials and move repositories to a personal account before graduation. As graduation approaches, use Google Takeout to export all mail and Drive files to your computer or a personal account.

What to do when your student Google Drive is full

A full student Google Drive is an increasingly common problem because Google no longer gives education accounts unlimited storage; the school receives a pooled quota and divides it among users. When Drive says it is full, first open Storage to see what takes the most space (usually recorded lecture videos, Meet files, and shared folders), delete or move them to a personal account, then empty the Trash. If that is still not enough, some schools let you request a larger quota through the IT office.
