2026 freshman checklist: 9 things to do, in order

The whole enrollment process fits into the nine items below, and the order matters: skip item 1 and everything after it is moot, while leaving housing and tuition until the day before enrollment is how people end up scrambling.

Each item is explained in detail in the sections below, with real dates from five universities you can compare against your own.

• Confirm your admission online On the MOET admission system, before the deadline MOET announces for the year you sat the exam (usually in the second half of August).
• Read your university's enrollment guide Only on the official .edu.vn website; many universities add an online enrollment step on their own portal.
• Gather and scan the document set Admission notice, diploma or temporary graduation certificate, transcript, citizen ID, ID photos, student profile form, Youth Union, military service and priority papers.
• Settle your housing Check the schedule and conditions on your university's dorm site, or find a rented room before enrollment day.
• Prepare first-semester tuition and health insurance Per your university's fee notice; ask exactly when payment is due, because it differs by university.
• Show up on your enrollment day Bring originals for verification and copies to hand in; the enrollment day is set by each university.
• Activate your .edu.vn email and portal account Do it in the first week – official academic notices all go through this address.
• Attend orientation week, join the class Zalo group This is where you learn about conduct scores, academic warning thresholds and who your advisor is.
• Look up your university's period (tiết) table Every university has its own hours; using another university's table means being late to your very first class.

First of all: confirm your admission online on the MOET system

Once admission results are out, the first thing to do is not to rush to the university but to log in to the MOET admission system (where you registered your preferences) and confirm your admission online. The system records only one admission result per candidate, so this step is essentially you 'claiming your seat' at that university.

The online confirmation deadline is set by MOET in its admission timetable each year and usually falls in the second half of August, after results are released. It changes every year, so take the exact date and time from the official MOET and university announcements for the year you sat the exam. Miss the deadline and you are treated as having declined the offer: the university no longer holds your seat, and 'I forgot to click confirm' happens to someone every single year.

Confirming on the MOET system and enrolling at the university are two separate steps. The online confirmation only means 'I accept the seat'; you still have to complete the freshman enrollment procedure according to the university's own guide – many universities add an online enrollment registration step on their own portal before scheduling a day for in-person document submission.

Trust enrollment information only from the university's official website (.edu.vn domain) and official admission channels. Every enrollment season brings fake 'K26' groups and messages asking you to transfer money to 'hold a seat' – if you get one, check with the university's admission office before doing anything.

What documents does 2026 university enrollment require? The set to prepare in advance

Each university sets its own document list in its enrollment guide – TDTU, for example, publishes a whole 'Enrollment Procedure Guide' package for the 2025 cohort, together with the handbook 'Things to know when studying at TDTU'. Below are the items almost every university asks for, so you can gather them first and then check against your own university's official list.

Small tip: scan all documents into PDF or image files before enrollment day, because the university's online registration step usually requires uploads. Originals are only for on-site verification – do not hand them over for good.

• Admission notice Printed admission or enrollment notice; many universities let you print it from the admission portal.
• High school diploma Original diploma or temporary graduation certificate for verification, plus a notarized copy.
• High school transcript Original and a copy; some universities keep the copy in your student file.
• Citizen ID card Original and a copy; check that name and date of birth match your exam records.
• ID photos Prepare more than the university asks for, in the size and background the guide specifies.
• Student profile form Personal background form on the university's template, with local authority certification if required.
• Youth Union, military service, priority papers Youth Union transfer paper, military service registration (for men), and priority or policy-status papers – bring them if applicable.
• Start-of-year fees First-semester tuition, health insurance and other start-of-course fees per the university's fee notice; many universities collect by bank transfer.

If you qualify for policy status (poor household, child of a war invalid or fallen soldier, etc.), submit the priority papers while you are doing the enrollment procedure – only then can you be considered for a tuition reduction from the first semester; submitting late may mean waiting until the next one.

2026 university enrollment dates: every university has its own

There is no nationwide enrollment date. MOET only fixes the online confirmation deadline; the enrollment day, orientation week and first official class day are decided by each university – usually between late August and early September. The exact schedule appears on each university's admission website after results are released, so follow that page instead of waiting for one common date.

The table below is compiled from the academic year charts and official announcements of five universities in and around Ho Chi Minh City. Two reading notes: HCMUT's 2026 date (24/8/2026) is read off a week-based academic chart, so treat it as 'the week starting 24 August'; and for EIU, 5/9/2025 is the opening ceremony of the 2025-26 academic year. A '-' means this article found no published date, not that the university has no schedule.

One thing to note: the 'semester start' date on the chart applies to the whole university (returning students), while freshmen usually start a bit later because they go through enrollment and orientation first. For example, HCMUT opened semester 1 of 2025-26 on 25 August 2025, but freshmen enrolled in early September and then followed their own schedule; HCMUTE's academic year began on 18 August 2025, yet the K2025 cohort enrolled and started in September.

UEH is the structural exception: it counts semesters by calendar year (early, mid and late semester), so freshmen enter the 'late semester', which in 2026 runs from 10 August 2026 to 3 January 2027. EIU runs on quarters (each term is 10 weeks of classes plus 2 weeks of exams), so the first term moves faster than at two-semester universities.

For universities not in the table, look for the 'academic year plan chart' on the university's academic affairs website – it is the most reliable document for class weeks, exam weeks and the Tết break.

The first week: what is a student ID number, the .edu.vn email and what is orientation week?

Right after completing the procedure, you receive your student ID number (MSSV). It is your 'ID card' for your whole time at university: used to log in to the academic portal, register for courses, view grades, pay tuition and get your student card. The format is set by each university – TDTU, for example, uses a letter-and-number format such as A25H9999.

Your student email (.edu.vn) is usually issued at the same time or a few days later, and at all five surveyed universities it runs on Google Workspace – meaning you sign in directly at gmail.com. Official academic notices – tuition, course registration, academic warnings – all go through this address, so activate it and change the password in the first week; according to HCMUTE's guide for the K25 cohort, the account may even be locked after 14 days without a login.

Orientation week is a handful of start-of-course sessions where the university walks you through the training regulations, conduct-score rules, scholarships, the Youth Union and Student Association, and student support services, usually ending with a reflection paper or a test. It may feel like a formality, but this is where you learn the academic warning thresholds, how conduct scores are calculated and who your academic advisor is – all things you will need later.

In the same week you are assigned to a class group and added to the class Zalo group with your academic advisor. Almost every 'urgent' notice – room changes, cancelled classes, document deadlines – goes through this Zalo group rather than the website, so do not mute it. The university's student handbook, such as 'Things to know when studying at TDTU 2025' or EIU's Student Handbook 2025-2026, is also handed out or published around this time.

Do classes start right after enrollment? First-semester timetable, class periods and course registration

In short: you do not attend class on enrollment day itself, but classes begin very soon after – usually within 1–2 weeks, once orientation week is over. How the first timetable is built depends on the university: some arrange it for you by class group, others have freshmen register for courses themselves right away. Ask your academic advisor or check the enrollment guide to find out which applies to you.

University runs on a credit system: one credit is one 50-minute lecture period per week across a 15-week semester, plus self-study time, and a bachelor's program is typically 120–140 credits. Because everyone accumulates credits on an individual study plan, your timetable will differ from your classmates' – the biggest change from high school.

Class hours also differ from high school and vary between universities, because each has its own period (tiết) table. The table below follows each university's current schedule: HCMUTE per the 2025-26 timetable, TDTU per the 2025 handbook, UEH per its help-desk notice, and HCMUT per the framework in force since semester 182. When your timetable says 'periods 1–3', look up your own university's table – never another university's.

A few notes on the table: at HCMUT, period 1 at 06:00 and the last period of the day are mainly for the work-study track, while regular daytime students usually start around 07:00 (period 2) – HCMUT's period table is reconstructed from official notices and press reports, so double-check it on MyBK. At TDTU, 3 periods are grouped into one 'ca', with 5 ca per day. EIU alone runs on quarters and does not publish a period table, so check your timetable directly on the university's AAO portal.

Course registration dates also depend on the university: HCMUT split semester 1 of 2025-26 into 3 registration rounds (17–24 June, 30 July–6 August and 19–21 August 2025), while EIU opens registration about 2 weeks before the term begins. On opening day the system is usually overloaded, so prepare your list of course codes and a backup plan in advance.

Defense education, politics, physical education: when do K26 freshmen do military training?

Besides major courses, every university has three groups of compulsory subjects: political theory courses (Marxist-Leninist philosophy, Ho Chi Minh Thought, etc.), National Defense and Security Education (GDQP-AN, a residential military-style course) and Physical Education. Military training is often one of the most memorable parts of freshman year, but each university schedules it differently.

For example, HCMUTE places the GDQP-AN term for the K2025 cohort in weeks 48–51 of its academic calendar, i.e. July–August 2026 – after the first year ends. EIU also has freshmen take defense education in the summer term. Some universities schedule it right at the start. Check your university's academic calendar to see which kind you are in, and do not rush to buy training gear before the official announcement.

What should first-year students prepare for housing and tuition?

Settle your housing early, ideally as soon as you get your admission notice. Dorm application schedules and conditions are posted on each university's own dorm site (ktx.tdtu.edu.vn, ktx.ueh.edu.vn, ktx.hcmute.edu.vn and so on), each with its own process and timing, so check right away rather than waiting for enrollment day.

On capacity: TDTU has 4 blocks (H, I, K, L) with 4,772 places (per the university's 2025 dorm introduction; rooms of 2/4/6/8); UEH has Dorm 1 at 135 Trần Hưng Đạo and Dorm 2 at 43-45 Nguyễn Chí Thanh; HCMUTE takes applications at ktx.hcmute.edu.vn; HCMUT has the Bách Khoa dorm at 497 Hòa Hảo, while students at the Dĩ An campus use the VNU-HCM dorm. EIU (Binh Duong New City) lists 800,000 VND per room per month for rooms of up to 4 people in its 2025-26 handbook; for the other four universities this article could not verify dorm fees from official sources, so ask the dorm office directly or check the university's dorm page.

Budget first-semester tuition on 2025-26 levels (they may rise yearly): HCMUT's standard program is about 30 million VND per year; UEH charges per credit at 1.1–1.3 million VND, roughly 33–39 million per year for the K51 cohort; HCMUTE 32.5–62 million per year depending on the major (press figures); TDTU 29.77–34.85 million per year for standard programs, with Pharmacy at 66.79 million. EIU's published rates are for the 2026 intake: 50 million (business and economics) or 27 million (engineering), frozen for 4 years. Universities usually collect first-semester tuition at enrollment or within a few weeks after, so ask exactly when payment is due.

How is university different from high school? 7 common freshman mistakes and the club question

The biggest difference: nobody keeps track of whether you show up and nobody reminds you of deadlines. You choose and register your own timetable, failing a course means paying to retake it yourself, and academic warnings arrive by email that many students never open. Freshman year is the easiest year to slide precisely because of that freedom.

Should you join clubs at university? Yes, but pick 1–2 clubs that fit (academic, skills, or something you genuinely enjoy) instead of signing up at every booth on club fair day. Clubs are where seniors guide you through course registration and share materials, and they are a channel for conduct points – but in the first semester, getting used to how university learning works comes first.

Finally, do not be afraid to ask. Every university has a large student community – the Confessions pages of HCMUT and UEH alone have hundreds of thousands of likes, and HCMUTE and TDTU have their own pages too – plus the class Zalo group and your academic advisor. The 'silliest' freshman question is usually one everyone once had.

• Skipping orientation You miss how conduct scores work, the academic warning thresholds and who your advisor is.
• Never opening student email Missing tuition deadlines, registration windows, class cancellations and even academic warnings.
• Picking courses to match friends Picking courses because friends take them rather than following your study plan – a common path to retakes or falling behind.
• Trusting fake K26 groups Transferring money to 'hold a dorm spot' or buying 'internal materials' from unverifiable accounts.
• Mixing up period times Using another university's period table found online and arriving late to your very first class.
• Neglecting general courses Politics, PE and defense education are all compulsory – fail them and you retake them just like major courses.
• Joining too many clubs Your calendar fills with club activities before you have found a study rhythm, and by mid-term there is no time left to review.
